Learning To Read

To learn to read children should first recognize the letters of the alphabet and know their sounds.  On this blog I have attached links to FREE downloads of Ebooks I created for learning the ALPHABET.  Simply click on the Ebook you want to read.  This will take you to the Teachers Pay Teachers link in order to download the Ebook.

Song for teaching consonants of the alphabet

I like to use songs when teaching.  Kids seem to naturally pick up concepts a little quicker this way.  One of the kids favorite songs for learning the letters of the alphabet is called "Zip-A-Zee-Zoo-Zah, Zip-A-Zee-Zay"  I wish I could remember my source for this song.  It's is a keeper.  This song can be used for each of the consonants except for "X".  Simply switch out the "Z" for each of the other letters.  If I forget to do this song the kids are quick to remind me.  (I laminated this song on a poster and left blanks where the "Z" goes so I can switch out the letters of the alphabet.)

Songs for teaching vowels of the alphabet

Since the children love to sing, I like to use songs to the tune of common nursery rhymes.  I begin with the 5 vowels since there is no way to read any word without knowing the vowels.  Here are a couple that I use.

For those of you who are afraid to sing, don't let that stop you.  Young children will think you are GREAT!  Believe me I do not have a singing voice but I am told quite often from the kinders that I am GREAT!

This one is a rap which I modified after the students put their
own twist to it.
